baby jonathon.

Twenty one years ago today, a very important person was born.

My little brother, Jonathon.

I remember the circumstances surrounding Jonathon's arrival more vividly than I can remember a lot of things. I wanted a sister until we found out he was a boy, and then I don't think I ever had doubts about how wonderful a baby brother would be. When he was born, I had just turned 8 years old and I was ecstatic. I made birth announcements using my Mom's rubber stamping supplies. They were hand stamped with a baby being delivered by a stork and I wrote out his weight and time of birth on each one in my best handwriting. I handed them out to my teacher and people at church and my grandma who was staying with us. I couldn't wait for the world to hear about Baby Jonathon!

I remember this mean kid at our church, a big husky kid who used to taunt me and the other girls, seeing Jonathon for the first time and I remember him saying, "Your new baby brother looks just like you!" in a kind and admirable way. It was the first of many people who would say that to me, but I don't think I could have been any prouder!

Jonathon was my new little protege and my 8 year old world was complete. My siblings were always good playmates, but the baby was like my special little pet. (Although, being the youngest of four, he did get ignored from time to time.) I took seriously my role as big sister and looked out for him and played with him. Growing up, he was my constant playmate and despite the eight years that separate us, we maintained a closeness that I feel very lucky for.

There is a short list of people I feel completely and utterly myself with; people I can belly laugh with and be absurd and silly with and people who I feel so at home with. Jonathon is near the top of that short list. He is one of the funniest people I know and he can make me laugh like no one else can. He is charismatic and charming and is a keen observer of the world around him. I am so lucky to have the family I have, and I am so thankful that Jonathon is a part of that family.

Happy birthday, Jonathon! You are my favorite little brother in the whole wide world! I hope this year is one of your best yet.
